April 10, 2025 (Japan Standard Time)—The science communication project Neu World is proud to announce the English release of its first manga, “.raw.” Originally created in Japanese, this research-inspired story is now available to a global audience, advancing Neu World’s mission to co-create visions of the future through collaboration between researchers, creators, and the public.

Neu World is part of the Moonshot Goal 1 Kanai Project “Internet of Brains (IoB),”  a research and development initiative under the Moonshot R&D Program launched by the Cabinet Office of Japan. The project fosters dialogue across society to explore how IoB’s research—leveraging neuroscience and AI to address societal challenges—can connect with the world.

By bringing together creators, researchers, and the public, Neu World produces sci-fi manga, novels, and other narratives as a platform for envisioning new futures.

Synopsis
In the year 2050, a future where neurotechnology has made remarkable advancements, Maya, the main character, is an artist specializing in Direct Brain Art (DBA)—a revolutionary form of art that allows her to project images directly from her mind into space. While her innovative work is gaining attention, some critics dismiss it as “soulless.” One day, she learns that her grandfather has fallen ill. Her mother asks her to use Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) technology to recreate a childhood landscape that her grandfather once saw—one that no longer exists. Determined to fulfill this request, Maya takes on the challenge with DBA, but…

Inspired by the research of Dr. Shuntaro Sasai, the Sub-Project Manager of IoB and a neuroscientist, the manga is written and illustrated by Ququ, a manga artist known for blending surreal aesthetics with thought-provoking narratives. In a future where technology has advanced even further, it may become possible to directly access information from the brain and share memories and experiences with others “as they are felt.”

We would love to hear your thoughts on the possibilities of such a future! The works created in this project are meant to engage society in dialogue about the future, and they do not represent the future envisioned by the project itself.
Please share your thoughts and impressions of the work on social media with the hashtag #NeuWorld.
Your opinions will be reflected in future research and the societal implementation that follows.
